Independent design checking for major highway bridges and viaducts
The national highways authority has announced a uniform system under which designs and drawings of major bridges, viaducts and other critical structures are checked independently by empanelled institutions, including IITs. Reviewers send observations on calculations and drawings, and the designer revises them before construction drawings are released. The stated aim is safety, quality and durability. Engineering note: an independent proof check is a second, separate analysis of the same structure, not a review of the original designer's spreadsheet, so it catches modelling errors as well as arithmetic ones.
