Axial load in bars

Basics Strength of Materials Reviewed 24 Oct 2026 2 min read

A bar loaded along its axis carries a uniform stress P / A over its cross-section and extends by P L / (A E). Real problems add three twists: the cross-section changes along the length, the bar is made of more than one material, or the bar is held at both ends so the forces cannot be found from equilibrium alone.

For a stepped bar, treat each segment separately and add the extensions: ΔL = Σ Pᵢ Lᵢ / (Aᵢ Eᵢ). Draw an axial force diagram first, because the internal force may change where loads are applied along the bar. For a tapered bar, integrate; a circular bar tapering from diameter D₁ to D₂ extends by 4 P L / (π E D₁ D₂).

Composite sections, such as a reinforced concrete column, share load in proportion to axial stiffness because both materials shorten by the same amount. With modular ratio m = Es/Ec, the steel stress is m times the concrete stress, and the load is P = σc (Ac + m As). Statically indeterminate bars fixed at both ends with a load in between are solved by compatibility: the total change in length must be zero.

Self-weight matters for long hanging members such as mine cables or deep piles: a uniform bar hanging under its own weight extends by γ L² / (2E), half what it would if its whole weight hung at the bottom. In design, axial members are checked for stress and, in compression, for buckling, which is covered under columns.

Key formulas
  • Stepped bar: ΔL = Σ Pᵢ Lᵢ / (Aᵢ Eᵢ)
  • Tapered circular bar: ΔL = 4 P L / (π E D₁ D₂)
  • Composite: σs = m σc, P = σc (Ac + m As), m = Es/Ec
  • Self-weight: ΔL = γ L² / (2E)
Solved example

Problem. A short column 300 × 300 mm has four 16 mm bars. It carries 900 kN. Take Es = 200 GPa and Ec = 25 GPa. Find stresses in concrete and steel (elastic).

  1. As = 4 × 201 = 804 mm²; Ac = 90 000 − 804 = 89 196 mm².
  2. m = 200 / 25 = 8. Equivalent area = 89 196 + 8 × 804 = 95 628 mm².
  3. σc = 900 000 / 95 628 = 9.41 MPa.
  4. σs = 8 × 9.41 = 75.3 MPa.

Answer. Concrete about 9.4 MPa, steel about 75 MPa (both compression)

Quick quiz

1How is extension of a stepped bar found?

By adding the extension of each segment.

2Why do steel and concrete share load by stiffness in a column?

They are bonded and shorten by the same strain.

3How much does a bar hanging under its own weight extend?

γL²/2E.
